60 South Bank Avenue
After prayer and discussion, in November 2013 we started looking to purchase a property in the South Bank area of York, with a view to establishing a community centre and church office local to where we meet on Sundays. God answered our prayers in the form of 60 South Bank Avenue, and the purchase was completed in May 2014. Building work started shorty after, and we are now using the venue for numerous community and church-based activities including:
-supporting Macmillan Trust Cancer Care
-‘Memory Lane’ – a cafe style get-together for senior citizens to reminisce, sing, share anecdotes, and enjoy tea and cake
-supporting the Alzheimer’s Society
-‘The Big Lunch’: a community get-together over free food (www.thebiglunch.com)
-Mum’s and toddler groups: ‘All Sorts’, ‘Jelly Babies’, and a group for the japanese community in York
-‘Time Out for Dads’ – a course we run through Family Matters York and Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (www.fmy.org.uk) that helps dads become better dads
-‘Minims’, a mum’s and babies music group for budding Mozarts (and Mums)
-film nights for International Students, plus any film buffs!
-an inter-church prayer meeting fortnightly for like-minded churches in York
– ‘321’ for those wanting to know about the Christian Faith
-Wednesdays@1 for small group Bible studies
-men’s breakfast; does what it says on the tin (or bacon wrapper)
-a coffee morning once a month for local people in Southbank
60 South Bank is also home to the Church Office (01904 629939) and has two rented flats upstairs.
International Café (Friends International)
This weekly Monday evening term-time café is held at the Spurriergate Centre, and gives visitors the opportunity to practise their English and make new friends. Chill ‘n Chat evenings alternate with activities such as entertaining English lessons, illustrated talks, games nights and food evenings.
Besom in York
We support Besom in York, a local Christian charity which acts as a bridge between people in need (referred by the local council and other agencies) and Christians who want to give either time, quality furniture or goods. Contact Neil Hulse: 07958 777247.
Restore York is a Christian charity set up to provide homes and support for people in York who would otherwise be homeless. Restore works in partnership with Green Pastures Housing and other local landlords to lease and manage properties and provide support for its tenants, so that having found a home they are also equipped to sustain their tenancy.
Family Matters York is a charity working to strengthen relationships and build confidence within families. This is done through a portfolio of training workshops and courses, in-house resources and an extensive range of accredited family support programmes tailored to the needs of families.
York Schools and Youth Trust (YoYo) is a charity that works with York schools and churches to bring the Christian faith alive. We want young people to have the chance to explore the Christian faith, to equip churches to work in their local schools, and encourage Christians in schools as they live out their faith.
