We are: York Evangelical Church
What We Believe
At the heart of what we believe is the gospel – the good news that Jesus became a man and died on a cross so that we might be saved from the consequences of our wrongdoings. We believe that this good news changes everything: how we live our lives on earth and where we go after we die.
The Christian Faith
We are a Christian church, with our core beliefs standing with Christians down the ages.
We believe that God created the world and continues to rule over it today. We believe God made human beings in His image - to be in a perfect relationship with Himself - and gave them His creation to rule over and enjoy. Despite this, the first humans rebelled, breaking the relationship and bringing brokenness into the perfect creation and our relationship with God.
But God didn't leave things in this broken state. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be born as a human being and walk the earth. He lived a perfect life and taught about life in the Kingdom of God. He called all people to turn from their sin and to follow him.
Jesus was ultimately betrayed and was sentenced to die on a cross despite his innocence. He died and was buried, taking the punishment for sin, so that all who come to him in faith can be forgiven and have a new relationship with God. Three days later, Jesus came to life again, appearing to hundreds of his followers. He went back to Heaven where he rules with God.
After that, God sent the Holy Spirit to live within His people to help them live lives that please Him. Jesus calls his followers to live new lives in community with God, and with each other in the church, holding out the message of Jesus to the world around us.
Because Jesus has restored our relationship with God, we are promised eternity in Heaven when we die. One day, Jesus will come back to earth to judge all people, bringing those who trust in Him into a newly-made perfect creation. All the bad things in the world will be taken away and we will live with God forever, in perfect relationship, just how it was designed to be.
This is the message we believe in. This is the message we want to share with the world.

Doctrinal Distinctives
We recognise that there are a number of doctrines, not referred to in the Basis of Faith, over which genuine Christian believers may take different views. Our Doctrinal Distinctives set out the position and teaching of the Church on these matters.
